The Port of São Sebastião, on the northern coast of São Paulo state, received the Anemos sailship on Thursday (30), a vessel powered exclusively by wind, to export coffee and cocoa to Europe. It is the ship’s second call at the terminal in less than a year.

Built in Vietnam, the Anemos is carrying about 600 tonnes of green coffee and 11 tonnes of cocoa from the Amazon, produced in the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, and Pará. The cargo is bound for France, where the coffee will be roasted and distributed across European markets. The voyage is expected to take about three weeks.

The operation marks the resumption of coffee exports through the Port of São Sebastião, which had not handled the product in more than six decades. The return took place in September 2024, when 8,000 tonnes of green coffee were shipped from the terminal to Germany.

In this latest shipment, nine Brazilian exporters are participating, with sustainably produced coffees that ensure full traceability, reduced pesticide use, and efficient water management.

The choice of the port as the point of shipment is tied to the Green Seal of the São Sebastião Dock Company (CDSS), part of the Secretariat for Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics (Semil), which recognizes environmentally responsible practices at the terminal.

According to CDSS President Ernesto Sampaio, “investing in sustainable maritime transport is essential to show that economic growth can be achieved without harming the environment. The Anemos is an example of innovation we aim to replicate in future operations.”

With a 65-meter mast, the Anemos sails without fossil fuel, using its auxiliary engine only in extreme calm conditions. Electricity on board is also generated by wind, and the sails are operated via joysticks in the control cabin.
