Portonave welcomes ONE’s sustainable vessel on first call to Latin America

The new-generation vessel of the shipping line Ocean Network Express (ONE), the ONE Strength, berthed at the Port Terminal this Monday (17). Its arrival represents an important milestone for decarbonization in the port segment – marking its first voyage to the east coast of Latin America. The container ship is designed to combine operational efficiency with high environmental performance.

During operations at Portonave, 1,311 containers were unloaded and 27 loads were carried out. The vessel is part of the SX1 service from East Asia, with regular calls in Navegantes. In addition to Brazil, the service calls China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Uruguay, and Argentina.

The ONE Strength incorporates innovative technologies and features that ensure reduced energy consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions. It can use alternative fuel sources such as ammonia and methanol, has an optimized hull for greater navigation efficiency, next-generation energy-saving devices, integration of smart technology for optimized operational performance, an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system, and shore power – a system that allows the ship to connect to on-shore electricity while berthed.

Soon, at Portonave’s quay, the shore power technology will be available not only for the ONE Strength, but for all vessels equipped with the system. This is because the Port Terminal is also continually investing to support sustainable development. Currently, the quay is undergoing an upgrade project, a R$1 billion investment, to receive ships 400 meters long and 17 meters deep. With the new infrastructure, shore power installations will be possible – essential for advancing decarbonization in the sector. With this, the company will be the first to incorporate this technology in the country.

In April, Portonave acquired equipment with lower greenhouse gas emissions, including 2 new Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes and 14 Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes for container handling, scheduled for installation in 2026. This year, the company received the Maritime Award of the Americas, an international recognition for reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions in its operations.
