Residents of the Macuco neighborhood in Santos remain mobilized in response to the planned expropriations linked to the Santos–Guarujá tunnel project, which still has no defined schedule from the State Government. The Macuco Community Association (Acom) is seeking political support through federal congresswoman Sâmia Bonfim (PSOL) and councilwoman Débora Camilo (PSOL).

Acom delivered a letter with demands and warnings about the social, economic, and urban impacts the neighborhood may face if the expropriations are confirmed.

“It is a cry for help,” says the president of the association, Alcione Alves Rocha. According to her, the goal is to secure political support amid the insecurity residents experience. “We need all the help we can get. The congresswoman offered to support us, and we gladly accepted.”

Alcione reports that, despite previous discussions with authorities, the responses have been vague. “They say there is no project, no signed document, no details to present. Always the same thing. We still await the visit promised by Governor Tarcísio de Freitas.”

The president emphasizes that the community is open to dialogue, provided it is conducted transparently. In the document delivered to the congresswoman, Acom states that traditional real estate appraisal criteria are inadequate for Macuco because many properties will have to be demolished in their entirety.

The association argues that compensation should be based on full replacement value, without depreciation, to ensure a dignified new beginning for affected families.

Another point of concern is the risk of gentrification, due to the rising value of real estate in Santos, the scarcity of available land, and intense market pressure.

The community awaits new developments and continues to press for more information about the Santos–Guarujá tunnel project and its impacts on the neighborhood.
