Portonave set a container handling record during the call of the CMA CGM Bahia, handling 6,180 boxes in 42 hours—the highest volume ever recorded on a single vessel in the terminal’s history. Average vessel productivity stood at 149 container moves per hour (MPH), underscoring the terminal’s commitment to fast and high-quality operations. The result surpassed the previous record of 5,661 moves, set in March 2024 during the operation of the Kota Pelangi.

The Bahia vessel is part of the fleet of French carrier CMA CGM and operates on the SEAS2 service, which links Asia to the east coast of South America, calling at ports along the Brazilian coast as well as Colombo (Sri Lanka), Tianjin, Qingdao, Ningbo, Shanghai, Shekou, Singapore and Hong Kong. Cargo handled on the service includes products such as tires, textiles, electronics and plastics, among others.

The vessel is 336 meters long, has a 51-meter beam, capacity for 13,264 TEUs and 2,400 reefer plugs for temperature-controlled cargo. Delivered in 2023, the ship is part of the carrier’s new generation of sustainable vessels, powered primarily by liquefied natural gas (LNG). It was also the first LNG-fueled ship to call at the Brazilian coast, in February 2024.

Dual-fuel LNG-powered vessels contribute to emissions reduction, avoiding up to 99% of sulfur emissions, 92% of nitrogen oxides and 91% of particulate matter. They are also designed to operate with carbon-neutral fuels once bunkering infrastructure becomes available in Brazil.

From January through November, the port terminal recorded a 1 million TEUs throughput, the highest productivity in the country (114 MPH), according to Brazil’s National Waterway Transportation Agency (ANTAQ), consolidating its position as a national benchmark in the segment. Over its 18 years of operations, Portonave is set to leave 2025 having received 10,000 vessel calls and handled 14 million TEUs.
