In Panama, Santos Port Authority Advances Plan for Green Corridor With Valencia

The Santos Port Authority (APS) took another decisive step toward more sustainable operations on Tuesday (Jan. 27) during the Green Shipping Corridors and Hubs event, held in Panama City. The meeting, organised by the International Maritime University of Panama, brought together port managers from the Caribbean, Latin America and Europe to promote low-carbon shipping routes.

Representing the Port of Santos, Operations Director Beto Mendes and the superintendent for Environment and Sustainability, Sidnei Aranha, met with Mar Chao López, president of the Port Authority of Valencia, Spain. The central topic was the practical implementation of a “green corridor” between the two ports — a logistics route in which vessel bunkering would be carried out exclusively with fuels that produce no CO₂ emissions.

Mendes and Chao signed a memorandum of understanding committing both sides to enable reciprocal bunkering with non-polluting fuels.

The creation of the corridor is not an isolated initiative. On Oct. 14, 2025, APS had already signed a contract with the Valenciaport Foundation for the delivery of a Decarbonisation Plan and an Energy Master Plan (PDE). During his presentation, Mendes outlined the potential of the Santos port complex and detailed the programmes under way to achieve carbon-neutral operations.

The event was also attended by Arcelino Tatto, an adviser to the Operations Directorate, as well as representatives from ports in Belgium, Chile and Ecuador, in addition to maritime operators and international associations focused on the energy transition in the sector.
