Port of Santos joins international association and expands environmental initiatives

The Santos Port Authority (APS), located on the coast of São Paulo, has become a full member of the International Association of Ports and Harbors. With this membership, the Port of Santos gains access to the Environmental Ship Index and the World Ports Sustainability Program, two globally recognized environmental initiatives.

According to APS, these systems function as international databases of best port practices, focusing on environmental sustainability and operational efficiency. The announcement was made on the 26th and represents a step forward in integrating the Port of Santos into global industry initiatives.

ESI platform

The Environmental Ship Index was created to identify vessels that exceed greenhouse gas emission reduction targets set by the International Maritime Organization.

According to APS, the ESI is the standard tool used by port authorities worldwide to reward shipowners who meet or surpass environmental requirements.

With access to the database, APS aims to improve alignment with environmental standards, including offering tariff discounts to so-called “green ships.” The platform contains information on more than 6,000 vessels with active environmental scores.

Participation in the WPSP

According to APS, the World Ports Sustainability Program coordinates international efforts across areas such as digitalization, infrastructure, health and safety, environment, communities, and climate and energy.

In a statement, the port authority said it will use the WPSP to align the Port of Santos with global excellence goals and to share socio-environmental projects developed in the Santos port complex with ports in different countries.
