Hapag-Lloyd said it will raise its base freight rates from  East Coast South America to the Mediterranean effective May 1, 2026. The increase will be $200 per container, according to a company notice.

The change applies to Freight All Kinds, cargo bound for Italy and Spain, classified as base ports, as well as other Mediterranean destinations categorized as outports. The new rates will remain in effect until further notice and will be subject to applicable surcharges.

New rates announced by Hapag-Lloyd

Container type Destination Current rate (US$) New rate (US$) Change (US$)
Dry 20’ Italy/Spain 3,000 3,200 200
Dry 20’ Other Mediterranean ports 4,500 4,700 200
Dry 40’ Italy/Spain 4,500 4,700 200
Dry 40’ Other Mediterranean ports 6,000 6,200 200
Reefer 20’ Italy/Spain 6,000 6,200 200
Reefer 20’ Other Mediterranean ports 7,500 7,700 200
Reefer 40’ Italy/Spain 6,000 6,200 200
Reefer 40’ Other Mediterranean ports 7,500 7,700 200

The increase underscores the broader trend of tariff adjustments on routes between South America and Europe. The company’s notice, however, did not detail the operational or commercial factors behind the move.

One advantage of presenting the information this way is that it keeps the body of the article from becoming overloaded with figures, while the table absorbs the more technical details.
