Petrobras to resume work on new fertilizer plant in Brazil

Petrobras’ board of directors decided on Monday (April 13) to resume construction of the Nitrogen Fertilizer Unit III in Três Lagoas, Mato Grosso do Sul state.

The project had already been approved by the board in October 2024 as part of the company’s 2026-2030 business plan. Investment required to complete the unit is estimated at about $1 billion.

The plan is for construction to resume in the first half of this year, with the plant expected to begin commercial operations in 2029.

Construction of the unit has been halted since 2015. The project came back under review from 2023, when Petrobras decided to return to the fertilizer segment.

Plant capacity

The project calls for production of about 3,600 tonnes per day of urea and 2,200 tonnes per day of ammonia, of which 180 tonnes will be surplus and available for sale.

Output will be directed mainly to the states of Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, Paraná and São Paulo, some of Brazil’s main agricultural producing regions.

Ammonia is a feedstock for the fertilizer and petrochemical sectors. Urea is the nitrogen fertilizer most in demand in Brazil, with national consumption of about 8 million tonnes per year.

Agribusiness uses the product in corn, sugar cane, coffee, wheat and cotton crops, as well as in feed supplements for ruminants.
