The Inácio Barbosa Maritime Terminal, better known as TMIB, operated by VLI Logística in Barra dos Coqueiros, Sergipe state, set a new single-vessel discharge record in early April after handling 39,450 tonnes of slag from one ship. The milestone was reached during the operation of the M/V Emir Aksoy, a Supramax-class vessel on its first commercial voyage after being built at a shipyard in China.
Steel slag is a byproduct of steel production, generated through the separation of impurities from iron ore during the industrial process. After treatment and processing, it becomes a strategic input for the cement industry.
“Beyond the logistics performance, this milestone reinforces the terminal’s strategic role in serving the industrial supply chain in northern and northeastern Brazil, regions that have been showing rising demand for industrial inputs. Sergipe, in particular, stands out as a surplus-producing state in cement manufacturing, increasing its relevance in the country’s logistics and industrial dynamics,” said Osmar Selhorst Filho, TMIB’s operations manager.
The operation used 98.5% of the terminal’s maximum deadweight tonnage capacity, with 64,100 tonnes handled against a permitted limit of 65,000 tonnes, highlighting the port unit’s operational maturity and its ability to receive large vessels with high capacity utilization.
The result also reflects the management synergies within the TMIB Consortium, a private-use terminal operated and managed by VLI Logística since 2014 in partnership with Petrobras, with a focus on infrastructure development, operational efficiency and market service.
