Wilson Sons, port and maritime logistics operator with more than 188 years in the market, will perform, in an unprecedented manner, operations with drones for the delivery and collection of documents to platform supply vessels (PSVs) and other services, in Guanabara Bay. The initiative, which began last year, at the Port of Salvador (BA), will once again be conducted through its Shipping Agency. This time, the tests are being carried out with the support of its Rio Offshore Support Base (RJ), since last April 6th.
The unmanned aerial vehicles and systems are from the company Speedbird Aero, specialized in the operation of drones, which already accounts for more than a thousand flights in the offshore sector in Singapore. To perform the operation in Brazil, all necessary authorizations and licenses were issued by the authorities, such as the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) and the Department of Airspace Control (Decea). The testing period is for the so-called Proof of Concept and the verification of technical feasibility.
Rodrigo Lopes, operations manager of Wilson Sons’ shipping agency, the largest and most experienced shipping agency in Brazil, explains that “the use of drones for deliveries by Wilson Sons is a milestone in the port and logistics sector, as it makes operations even safer and more efficient, contributing, through innovation and the adoption of new technologies, to the decarbonization of the offshore energy industry and the sustainable development of Brazil.”
The drones provide agility to the operation, always with safety, a non-negotiable value of the company, transporting, for example, light documents (objects weighing up to five kilograms). The average time between the Rio Base and the vessels is calculated at up to 9 minutes, on a flight path of approximately eight kilometers.
For Edwardo Valverde, general manager of Operations for Wilson Sons’ Offshore Support Bases, the start of tests with drones at the Rio Base points to a trend in the energy segment in Brazil: “This technology elevates the efficiency of offshore operations and contributes directly to sustainability goals, strengthening our performance in supporting the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions of our partners”.
