Throughput at the Port of Itaqui in Maranhão, the largest public port complex in Brazil’s Northern Arc, ended the first quarter of 2026 up 5% from the same period a year earlier, reaching 7.2 million tonnes.
Fertilizer imports were among the highlights. In the cumulative first quarter of 2026, the port handled 934,000 tonnes, compared with 839,000 tonnes in the same period last year, marking the best first quarter on record for the segment and an 11% increase over the previous high.
The chart below shows the monthly volumes of fertilizers imported from abroad and unloaded at the Port of Itaqui between January 2023 and March 2026. The data was obtained and processed by Datamar’s business intelligence team.

The port also posted its best March ever for fertilizers, with 281,000 tonnes handled, surpassing the previous record set in March 2021, when 261,000 tonnes were moved.
Strategy
According to port president Oquerlina Costa, the results reflect a well-structured strategy focused on performance.
“More than just numbers, these results reflect the market’s confidence in our operational capacity and reinforce Maranhão’s role as a strategic logistics corridor. The productivity records are a direct consequence of investments in technology, planning and efficient berth management,” she said.
Best performance
In the liquid bulk segment, throughput reached 2.346 million tonnes between January and March, surpassing the previous record of 2.143 million tonnes set in 2024, for growth of 10%.
The performance points to a year of new milestones.
“Our commitment is to operational excellence and consistent results. By surpassing historical records, we are not only improving our performance, but also reaffirming the strategic role of our infrastructure in the country’s logistics sovereignty,” Oquerlina said.
