Ibama defines dates and venues for Porto Meridional licensing hearings

The locations and schedules for the public hearings regarding the environmental licensing of Porto Meridional, in Arroio do Sal, by the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) have been defined. The agency published the information in Brazil’s Official Gazette (DOU). A website will also be available for virtual participation.
* Arroio do Sal: June 16, 6 p.m., at CTG Rincão de Estância, Rua dos Eucaliptos, No. 343, Quatro Lagos district.
* Porto Alegre: June 18, 6 p.m., at Grêmio Náutico União, Rua João Obino, No. 300, Petrópolis district
During the hearings, the community will be able to present questions regarding the project, which the company must answer within 30 days. The meetings, conducted by Ibama, are required for the process to obtain the preliminary license, which certifies the environmental feasibility of the project. With this license, the company may proceed with fundraising efforts. To begin construction, however, an installation license from Ibama will still be required.
The port
Porto Meridional will be an offshore development built at sea, without affecting the beach shoreline. It will also occupy an area of 80 hectares — equivalent to 80 soccer fields — at Rondinha Nova beach. The BRL 6.5 billion investment is entirely private and is expected to generate 1,500 jobs. The port’s projected capacity is 53 million tons.
Competition
During a recent meeting with one of the world’s largest logistics operators, the columnist heard expectations that the port of Arroio do Sal will make the sector more competitive in the state, prompting the container terminal (Tecon) at the Port of Rio Grande to become more efficient and viable. If that happens — considered the best-case scenario — Rio Grande do Sul could attract cargo that currently bypasses the state or opts for air transport, despite higher costs. In other words, there would be demand for both ports, reducing the risk of operational decline currently hanging over the Rio Grande.
