China has indefinitely suspended beef imports from another Brazilian meatpacking plant. The affected facility is JBS’s plant in Vilhena, Rondônia, after progesterone was detected in shipments exported to the Chinese market.

The notification was sent by China’s General Administration of Customs (GACC) to Brazilian authorities in Beijing on May 26. The measure is sanitary in nature and follows Chinese protocols for cases involving the detection of substances that do not comply with the country’s import requirements.

In April, China had already suspended other Brazilian beef-exporting plants after identifying a substance not authorized under Chinese regulations in an exported shipment.

At that time, residues of medroxyprogesterone acetate were detected in frozen boneless beef. The substance is used as a veterinary drug but is not permitted under Chinese legislation for animals intended for food production.

With this latest decision, the number of Brazilian meatpacking plants currently barred from exporting beef to China rises to five.

Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and the Brazilian Association of Meat Exporting Industries (ABIEC) are monitoring the case.
