Portos RS completes Belém Channel dredging, starts work on Junco Channel

Portos RS completed dredging on the Belém Channel on June 11, advancing its dredging schedule for Rio Grande do Sul’s inland waterway system. The company has now started work on the Junco Channel.

The projects are part of a broader package funded by the Rio Grande Plan Fund, or FUNRIGS, which has allocated more than R$731 million to rebuild and upgrade the state’s waterway and port infrastructure. Work on the Junco Channel is expected to take about 60 days and is being carried out by two cutter suction dredgers, Belo Monte and Mariana.

Completion of the Belém Channel marks another step in the dredging program, improving vessel traffic conditions and increasing safety for waterway operations. With work now under way on the Junco Channel, Portos RS said it is maintaining the pace of the project.

“The completion of dredging on the Belém Channel and the start of work on the Junco Channel represent another concrete step in the recovery and strengthening of our waterway infrastructure. We are moving forward in a planned and continuous manner, ensuring better navigability, safer operations and greater logistics efficiency for Rio Grande do Sul,” said Portos RS President Fábio Machado.

“These investments reflect the commitment of the state government and Portos RS to restoring development, increasing the competitiveness of our ports and waterways and strengthening a transport mode that is essential to Rio Grande do Sul’s economy,” he added.

The work is part of a larger contract covering the dredging of eight strategic channels in the waterway system: Pedras Brancas, Humaitá, Cais do Porto, Navegantes, Cristal, Belém, Junco and Campista. The projects are part of an ongoing effort to restore and modernize waterway infrastructure, improving the reliability of inland navigation and supporting logistics integration across Rio Grande do Sul.
