The Port of São Sebastião plans to invest R$5.29 million in 2026 in environmental monitoring programs, socio-environmental initiatives and emergency prevention and response measures.
The spending is part of the requirements set out in the operating license issued by Ibama, Brazil’s federal environmental agency, and is tied to the port’s permanent environmental programs.
In all, the plan covers the continuation of 22 environmental programs, ranging from coastal ecosystem monitoring to operational control measures and engagement with nearby communities.
Emergency preparedness to receive largest share
According to the published schedule, the largest share of the investment will go to emergency preparedness and response.
Around R$1.69 million is expected to be spent on training, drills and emergency response structure.
Another R$1.65 million is earmarked for biodiversity-related programs, while R$1.15 million will go to socio-environmental initiatives. Monitoring of physical environmental conditions will receive about R$800,000.
Monitoring covers wildlife, mangroves and water quality
Planned activities include monitoring mangrove areas, birdlife and aquatic biodiversity, including fish, mollusks and planktonic organisms.
The plan also includes regular surveys of water quality, sediment analysis and assessments of effluents generated during port operations.
Programs include emissions control and environmental education
In addition to environmental monitoring, the plan includes measures to control suspended particles, track greenhouse gas emissions and develop environmental education projects.
The program also provides for social communication efforts and engagement with residents living near the port complex.
Investments tied to environmental licensing
The Port of São Sebastião, which is linked to the São Paulo State Secretariat for the Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics, maintains the programs as part of the conditions set by environmental authorities for the continuation of port operations.
According to the port, the initiatives are designed to monitor possible impacts from port activity and meet the requirements established under the environmental licensing process.
