Brazil sees opportunities despite lower Hass avocado prices
Jul, 03, 2026 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202627
The global Hass avocado market continued to expand in 2026, although higher production volumes led to lower prices in several producing regions. According to industry sources, the price adjustment reflects increased global supply rather than weaker demand.
Expansion of plantings in countries including Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Morocco, Kenya, South Africa, and Chile has increased export volumes. Many orchards established between 2018 and 2023 have now entered commercial production, resulting in overlapping harvest windows and increased availability for key markets such as Europe and the United States.
The higher supply, together with increased competition, logistics costs, stricter quality requirements, and exchange rate movements, placed pressure on returns during 2026. Europe, one of the main destinations for Hass exports, experienced greater competition as multiple origins entered the market simultaneously.
Despite the market adjustment, long-term demand continues to grow. According to OECD-FAO projections, avocados are expected to become the world’s most traded tropical fruit by 2030, with global exports exceeding 3.9 million tons. Current demand remains concentrated in the United States and Europe, while China, Japan, South Korea, and India are expected to contribute to future consumption growth.
A Rabobank report estimates the global avocado market is worth more than US$20 billion. Consumption growth continues to be supported by changing dietary habits, retail expansion, and wider international availability.
The sector is also placing greater emphasis on production efficiency, fruit quality, logistics, postharvest management, traceability, and supply consistency as competition increases.
Brazil is identified as having further potential for expansion in the Hass sector. The country offers suitable growing conditions, available production areas, and harvest windows that can complement supplies from other origins. The opening of the Japanese market to Brazilian Hass avocados in 2024 has also expanded export opportunities.
In the year-to-date period from January to May 2026, Brazil exported 2,352 TEUs of avocados, according to Datamar data. That volume represents an increase of 161% compared with the same period a year earlier. The chart below compares the figures with previous years:

Looking ahead, industry projections continue to indicate growth through 2035. Market participants expect future competitiveness to depend on quality, regularity of supply, sustainability, traceability, postharvest performance, and the ability to produce during strategic marketing windows.
