Brazil instant coffee sector exempt from new US tariffs, protecting up to $2.5 billion in exports

Brazil’s instant coffee is exempt from a new 25% U.S. ​tariff on Brazilian imports, a move ‌eagerly awaited by the industry, which had previously been the only segment of Brazil’s ​coffee sector subject to the ​U.S. duties.

According to the Brazilian coffee exporters ⁠group Cecafe, the exemption protects ​between $2 billion and $2.5 billion in Brazilian coffee ​exports to the United States each year.

Instant coffee remained subject to U.S. tariffs even after ​President Donald Trump’s administration revoked duties ​on most Brazilian products last year, including green ‌coffee ⁠beans and even flavored varieties of instant coffee.

Brazilian instant coffee exports to the U.S. fell by close to 30% ​in 2025 ​versus ⁠the previous year as the industry struggled under the tariffs, ​according to the Brazilian Instant ​Coffee ⁠Industry Association (Abics).

Datamar data shows that 747 TEUs of Brazilian instant, soluble coffee were shipped to the United States in the first five months of 2026. The chart below compares exports of the product in the same period over recent years:

The exemption represents efforts on the part of Cecafe and the U.S. ⁠National ​Coffee Association, Cecafe’s director ​general Marcos Matos said.
