Argentina wool exports rise 57% as China demand strengthens

Argentina wool exports rose sharply in the 2025/26 season, supported by stronger international demand and a shift in destination markets that increased China’s role as the leading buyer.

According to Argentina’s Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, wool exports totaled US$149.5 million between July 2025 and April 2026, up 57% from the same period of the previous season.

Export volumes also increased. Argentina shipped 31,825 tonnes of wool in the first 10 months of the current season, a 23.5% rise from the 2024/25 cycle.

The simultaneous increase in volume and value points to a broader recovery across Argentina’s wool chain, which includes sheep producers, collectors, processing plants and exporters.

The Agriculture Secretariat said the figures for the 2025/26 season confirm a positive and sustained recovery for the sector, strengthening the position of Argentine wool in international markets after several years marked by price volatility, climate challenges and changes in global consumption patterns.

China gains share in Argentina’s wool trade

One of the main changes this season has been China’s growing weight as a destination for Argentine wool. The Asian market increased its share of Argentina’s wool export value from 23% to 33% in one year.

That shift confirms a reconfiguration of buyer markets and consolidates China’s textile industry as one of the main drivers of demand for Argentine wool.

The official report also highlighted April’s performance, when wool exports rose 70% compared with the same month last year.

The result reinforces the sector’s stronger momentum heading into the end of the season, as external demand improves and new markets become more relevant for Argentina’s sheep and wool production.

For exporters and logistics operators, the rebound in Argentina wool exports points to renewed activity in a regional supply chain tied to Patagonia and other sheep-producing areas. The sector remains smaller than Argentina’s main grain, meat and energy export flows, but its recovery adds to the broader improvement in the country’s regional agribusiness exports.
