Brazilian Customs Seizes 180,000 E-Cigarettes Worth R$21 Million at Port of Santos

Brazil’s Federal Revenue Service detained a container holding approximately 180,000 smuggled e-cigarettes at the Port of Santos, on the coast of São Paulo state. The operation took place a week after another container carrying the same type of cargo was detained at the port complex.

According to the agency, the e-cigarettes were discovered during a physical inspection of a container whose cargo had been declared as “electrical machinery and equipment.”

The products were packed alongside headphones, power banks, microphones, speakers and cell phone holders. The Federal Revenue Service said the container was detained on Friday (25), and the e-cigarettes were sorted, identified, counted and valued before being seized.

The agency estimates that approximately 180,000 e-cigarettes were seized, along with their rechargeable batteries, and that their market value could exceed R$21 million.

Ban

Electronic smoking devices, including e-cigarettes, vapes, pods and vaporizers, are banned in Brazil.

A resolution issued by Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) prohibits the manufacture, import, sale, storage, transportation and advertising of these devices, which are known to pose health risks to users.

Previous Seizure

The physical inspection of the first container selected for examination took place on September 18. It held more than 283,000 e-cigarettes, with a market value that could reach R$28 million. The shipment originated in Yantian, China, and its declared destination was Montevideo, Uruguay.
