In November, Brazilian furniture and mattress exports totaled nearly US$ 87.2 million (FOB). Such a result represented a 35% increase in exported volume compared to November 2020, confirming that the Brazilian furniture industry has grown by 54.2% (January-November) and 52.9% year-round.
The data above was released by Abimóvel, the Brazilian Association of Furniture Industries, in partnership with Apex-Brasil, Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency.
Furniture exports by line
On a month-to-month basis, the data shows that most sectors increased when compared to November 2020. Conversely, only mattresses have decreased by 17% in the month. However, regardless of the drop in volume exported, the yearly balance was kept positive at 38.2%.
The positive spotlight was given to metallic furniture pieces, which grew by 84.6% month-to-month, the highest recorded growth among all sectors. As a result, upholstered furniture saw the second-largest increase, +40.2 %, in November 2021 compared to the same month in 2020.
However, when it comes to participation by product line, wooden furniture remains the standout of Brazilian furniture exports, accounting for 85.6% of the total amount exported by the country, amounting to approximately US$ 74.7 million (FOB) in revenue. Upholstered furniture ranks second, with a share of 9.5 percent. Metal furniture and mattresses had shares of 2.7 percent and 2.1 percent, respectively, maintaining the previous month’s pace.

South America in the spotlight
Regarding the main destinations for Brazilian exports of furniture and mattresses, the USA comes as the largest importer of Brazilian furniture in three categories, with the exception of mattresses, which are primarily purchased by Uruguay. Uruguay is ranked fourth overall, having imported 33.5 % more in November and 36.8 % more for the year.
Speaking of South American countries, exports to Chile, which received 9.7% of total national furniture industry exports in November 2021, continued to grow with a 99.2% increase month-to-month and 186.4% increase between January and November 2021.
Ecuador also deserves to be highlighted as it ranked ninth in the overall ranking. Ultimately, Brazilian furniture exports to Ecuador increased 155.5% in November, for a year-on-year increase of 117.8 %. Notwithstanding, the country still has a low share among the top destinations for Brazilian furniture, with plenty of room for growth in the sector.
