Ceará EPZ cargo handling up 6.1% in January

After ending 2020 with more than 11 million tons handled, Ceará Export Processing Zone (EPZ), the company that makes up the Pecém Complex, began the year with growth in its cargo flow. In January, the movement of goods reached 873,781 tons, an increase of 6.1% in comparison with the same period last year.
Among the main goods that passed through the gates of the Ceará EPZ in January, the largest flow came from iron ore, with 260,661 tons handled in the period, an increase of 1.44% compared to the same month last year. Mineral coal, in turn, totaled 178,539 tons during the month, an increase of 38.2% compared to 2020.
“After the 2020 challenge, we are optimistic that, this year we will resume our production pace, which is so important for the economic development of Ceará. I have no doubt that with the work of our employees and installed companies, we will have a productive 2021”, highlights Andréa Freitas, operations director at Ceará EPZ
In January, Ceará EPZ (the only Export Processing Zone in operation in Brazil) also handled 212,965 tons of steel plates produced by Companhia Siderúrgica do Pecém (CSP), one of the three companies installed in the complex. In December 2020, the product, which is exported to several countries via Porto do Pecém, registered an increase of 19.6% in its movement, the biggest increase among the main cargoes of the Ceará EPZ.
Exports and imports
The US was the main importer of goods from Ceará EPZ in January, receiving 47,768 tons. In the same period, Canada (31,021 tons) and Belgium (7,531 tons) also received items processed by the company, which exported 86,320 tons over the month.
With regard to imports, the main commercial partners of the Ceará EPZ in January were the US (179,044 tons), Russia (10,275 tons), and South Korea (1,307 tons), which helped the company to receive a total of 191,195 tons during the month. China, Austria, Spain, Chile, Japan, and Portugal also sent goods to the Ceará EPZ, in a smaller quantity.
