Worst first quarter since 2010 for high-tech product exports
May, 31, 2021 Posted by Ruth HollardWeek 202124
Exports of high-tech products grew 4% in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the same period last year. The value went from US$ 1.29 billion to US$ 1.35 billion. But despite the growth, this was the second-worst first quarter since data began being reported, due to technological intensity, in 2010. The worst quarter so far was the first quarter of 2020.
The data are from an unprecedented analysis by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI), which releases this foreign trade assessment on a quarterly basis.
In the same period, imports of high-tech goods grew by 18%. The value went from US$6.8 billion to US$8.1 billion.
Purchases of Chinese products rose 46%, from US$ 2.06 billion to US$ 3.0 billion. It was the most significant increase among the countries from which Brazil buys these goods. This reinforces China’s position as the leading supplier of technology goods to Brazil, with a 38% share of the total.
