International experts arrive in Sri Lanka to deal with possible oil spill

International experts have traveled to Sri Lanka to join teams that have been preparing for several days for a possible oil spill from a cargo ship that suffered a massive fire for nearly two weeks before partially sinking off the coast of Colombo, announced its owner on Friday, June 4th.
The experts are from the two largest ship-owner-funded organizations for fighting pollution and oil spills caused by ships – the International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation, Ltd. (ITOPF) and Oil Spill Response (OSR) – announced X-Press Feeders, the company that owns the freighter, MV X-Press Pearl. “They will act in coordination with the Sri Lanka Marine Environmental Protection Authority (MEPA) and the Sri Lanka Navy to deal with a possible oil spill or other pollution,” the company added.
Its CEO, Shmuel Yoskovitz, apologized to Sri Lanka for the catastrophe. The ship burned for 13 days and flooded the island’s tourist beaches and surrounding waters with millions of plastic granules it was carrying, prompting the issuance of a ban on fishing, which is an important livelihood in the region.
