Port of Imbituba ends May with the best operating result in its history

On June 9, SCPAR Porto de Imbituba released the operational performance data for May at the Port of Imbituba. With 681,900 tons moved throughout the month, the complex set a new record for monthly operation. The volume increased 56.7% compared to that registered in May 2020. The previous record for the Port of Imbituba was from December last year when 662,500 tons were handled.

“The record handling at the Port of Imbituba confirms the positive numbers of the Santa Catarina economy, which is recovering despite the challenges posed by the pandemic. We will soon overcome this health crisis, with the advance of vaccination, and we will be able to celebrate the full resumption of growth”, highlights Governor Carlos Moisés.

The strong performance in May at the Port of Imbituba was related to the increase in the handling of coke (+ 818.9%), soy (+72.2%), cellulose (+54.2%), containers (+ 52.9%), bituminous coal (+41.9%), and urea (+36.9%), compared to the volume in tons carried out in the same month last year. The main cargoes were coke (222,200 t), soy (167,6010 t), and containers (93,700 t), which together accounted for more than 70% of operations at the port. Unloadings of wheat and soy ash were also received, as well as a shipment of soy bran.

In the year-to-date result for the first five months of the year, there was a 22.8% growth in port handling compared to the same period in 2020.

In all, Imbituba served 24 ships in May. The period was also marked by the return of steelworks operations, made possible by the availability of berthing at the port, with a short waiting time in the anchorage area. The ship HG SINGAPORE brought approximately 33,000 tons of steel coils and bars from China that were unloaded on June 4, entering this month’s movement statistics.

May marked the first anniversary of the start of pulp operations at the Port of Imbituba. Since 2020, when it became part of the portfolio, the port has become more experienced and has improved handling productivity, handling more than 210,000 tons. Pulp is considered a clean load and is the raw material for various types of paper and disposable diapers, fabrics, and other everyday products.
