Argentina resumes beef shipments with quotas at slaughterhouses
Jun, 23, 2021 Posted by Ruth HollardWeek 202126
On Tuesday, Argentina announced the reopening of beef exports. Upon resumption, each slaughterhouse will be able to sell abroad, at most, 50% of the average monthly volume shipped in 2020. The quotas will be valid until August 31, according to information supplied by the state agency Télam.
According to the government, the quota system aims to contain food inflation in the country. In addition, until December 31, meatpackers will not be able to export cuts that are popular in the country, such as paleta, matambre, and vazio, explained the Minister of Productive Development of Argentina, Matías Kulfas.
The changes displeased the productive sector. According to the Argentine newspaper La Nacion, Mesa de Enlace, which brings together the country’s main agricultural organizations, reportedly expressed its dissatisfaction to President Alberto Fernández over the decision to limit cuts and exported volumes.
