Brazil apple imports soar in the first half of 2023

Brazil has imported significantly more apples from January to May this year. According to the country’s Foreign Trade Secretariat Secex, the 45.7 thousand tonnes imported show an increase of 79% compared to the same period last year. Accordingly, importers disbursed USD 46.7 thousand (FOB), up 94% over the same comparison period.
Chile was Brazil’s leading supplier of apples, accounting for 40% of purchases, followed by Italy, with a 33% share, and Argentina, with 16%. According to sources consulted by Hortifruti/Cepea, the increased volumes may be a reflection of the strategy of building up stocks for the second half of the year, a period in which prices traditionally increase. Thus, apple imports stood at a good pace to meet the internal demand.
