Eldorado and Greenbrier Maxion partnered to develop a special railroad car for transporting pulp. The FTT-type total sider railroad car project started in November 2018, when Eldorado executives, accompanied by representatives of Greenbrier Maxion, visited The Greenbrier Companies factory in Poland to learn about the project developed by the company and adapt it to Brazilian needs.

In evaluating the project for the conditions of the Brazilian railways and for the Eldorado business model, several characteristics were considered, such as cargo protection, vandalism, transport efficiency, terminal efficiency, loading and unloading, ergonomics, reliability, robustness, maintainability, and tare.

The Railroad Car
After the development of the project, the first shipment was carried out by Eldorado in September 2019 in Aparecida do Taboado-MS. After 8 months of testing, improvements observed in the field were implemented with a focus on operations

The new railroad car showed better performance compared to the current model in 90% of the items evaluated, in addition to passing all the requirements of the American Railways Association (ARA) standard. Main advantages include the reduction in the railroad car’s tare weight, a significant increase in the load capacity per train and per wagon, and better ergonomics in operation and water tightness, preventing loss of load with the ingress of water during the rainy season. Another highlight is the greater ease in loading and unloading, which can be done either by forklifts or by overhead cranes.

The railroad car is also equipped with the Motion Control® bogie – Premium Tricks, specifically developed for the operating conditions and permanent way of the Brazilian railways, providing a significant increase in operational safety and service life components – through the optimization of the car’s dynamic behavior – and a reduction in maintenance costs.
