The operation of containers at the Port of Santos in July registered a double-digit increase (22.9%), with 397,314 TEUhandled; this increases the accumulated result for the year to 2.8 million TEU, an increase of 19.1%. This was the best July on record and the best year-to-date figure for cargo handling. As a result, the Santos Port Authority (SPA) expects the port to end 2021 with approximately 4.8 million TEU handled.
Exports accounted for 72% of handling (64.1 million tons), while imports accounted for 28% (24.8 million tons).
Soy and sugar stood out in the accumulated movement for the year, with exports of, respectively, 21.5 million tons and 11.9 million tons. Bulk soybean meal had the third-largest volume handled, with exports of 4.2 million tons, followed by fertilizer imports with 4.2 million tons, and by pulp exports, which totaled 2.9 million tons.
Bulk solids totaled 44.9 million tons, a growth of 0.4% over the same period in 2020; liquid bulk presented an increase of 0.34%, totaling 10.6 million tons; and the general loose cargo reached 3.8 million, an increase of 18.6% – the best marks for the period in each case.
Although the movement of cargo has increased, the flow of ships, with 2,851 dockings in the period from January to July, was 1% below that registered in the same period last year, evidencing the greater volume transported by vessels that dock in Santos.
