China launches the world’s first VLEC
Sep, 13, 2021 Posted by Sylvia SchandertWeek 202136
The first giant vessel for transporting ethane (VLEC – Very Large Ethane Carrier), the Pacific Ineos Belstaff, was launched at the Jiangnan Shipyard in China.
It is the first of an order for four of the largest VLECs ever commissioned. The ship is classified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) to operate on two fuels and can carry up to 99,000 cubic meters. The vessel is designed to transport ethane over long distances, but can also transport other liquefied gas cargoes such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and ethylene.
As a tradition, Jiangnan always gives a newly developed ship a nickname. Jiangnan has named this new VLEC Bluebonnet, the flower of the state of Texas, the home state of the ABS world headquarters.
