Porto Alegre terminal POA26 seen doubling cargo throughput after concession

Cargo throughput at terminal POA26 in Porto Alegre is expected to reach about 624,000 metric tons per year from the third year of operations under its new administrator, nearly doubling current volumes of around 321,000 tons, according to projections tied to the concession contract.
The terminal was awarded to the Consórcio Portos do Sul during the first block of port auctions held by Brazil’s Ministry of Ports and Airports in February. The forecast increase in throughput is based on planned investments of 21.13 million reais ($4.2 million) in upgrades and modernization outlined in the concession tender.
Ports and Airports Minister Silvio Costa Filho said the concession strengthens Rio Grande do Sul’s role as a regional logistics hub in South America.
“We must further enhance the state of Rio Grande do Sul as a logistics hub for regional integration because of its strategic location in South America. These major auctions and concessions are delivering results for Brazil,” he said.
Beyond modernizing the terminal, the concessionaire will be required to purchase the equipment necessary for operations. The contract also includes paving works, drainage improvements, electrical distribution and lighting upgrades at the site.
The project also предусматриes the construction of two new warehouses totaling 14,000 square meters.
According to National Secretary of Ports Alex Sandro de Ávila, the concession is particularly important because the area was heavily impacted by the 2024 floods.
“Severe weather events significantly affected the region and the capital’s port. Advancing with this auction helps restore development and generate jobs, income and investment,” he said.
Ávila added that the concession represents another step toward rebuilding and strengthening port activity across the state.
“The auction aligns with the actions already taken by the Rio Grande do Sul Port Authority, which has contracted dredging works in the region. With the tender completed, we will soon have a new terminal with more investment and higher cargo volumes,” he said.
Located on the left bank of the Guaíba River in northwestern Porto Alegre, the port’s area of influence covers much of Rio Grande do Sul, particularly the Porto Alegre–Caxias corridor and nearby municipalities.
Terminal POA26 occupies 22,052 square meters within the port’s operational zone and is designed for handling and storing dry bulk cargo, including fertilizers and grains.
