Portos do Paraná began a technical, economic, and environmental feasibility study to measure the development of a biogas plant to convert organic waste to energy at the Port of Paranaguá. The study is being conducted by the public company’s Administrative, Financial and Environment Directorate, with professionals from CIBiogás – International Center for Renewable Energy. The objective is to generate energy for the electricity grid or for use as vehicle fuel, among other applications.
According to the president of Portos do Paraná, Luiz Fernando Garcia, the project was already being debated by the public company even before participation in a world event on the subject. “In 2019, we participated in the meeting of the Conference of the Parties, COP 25, in Madrid, which focused on reducing the emission of greenhouse gases. Portos do Paraná had already begun a project to implement biodigesters”, he explained. “Participating in COP 25, as the only guest port, served as a signal to make sure we were on the right path”, reinforces Environment Director João Paulo Ribeiro Santana.
According to him, before participating in the international event, there was a visit to the company CIBiogás, which was created within Itaipu Binacional, in Foz do Iguaçu. The company provides advisory and consulting services for the assembly of biodigesters. “This equipment is a large structure where organic matter is placed which is then digested by bacteria and transformed into what is called biogas. This biogas can be used in different ways: to move engines, generators, vehicles”, explains Santana.
The Environment Director at Portos Paraná recalls that the grains that fall from port handling are noble residues for energy generation. “Not only grains, but wheat, bran, and soy. We comply with the law, we send it all to compost or landfill. From a legal point of view, we are absolutely correct. However, we want to go with what we saw and exposed at the UN, at COP 25”, says Santana. “In view of this, we are initiating a technical feasibility study, with CIBiogás, for the implementation of a biogas plant at the Port of Paranaguá. A bio-digestion plant that generates three by-products: biogas, electricity, and digestate”.
