World’s first all-electric, self-propelled container ship by Yara International takes maiden voyage

On November 19th, Norwegian fertilizer producer Yara International announced the start of the inaugural voyage of the company’s electric and autonomous container ship. The vessel departed from the Oslo fjord, in Norway.

Named the Yara Birkeland, the vessel was developed in collaboration with Kongsberg Gruppen and built by VARD with financial support from Enova. It will enter into commercial operation in 2022 and will transport fertilizers from Yara’s factory in Porsgrunn to the export port in Brevik, both in Norway.

“We are proud to be able to introduce the world’s first all-electric, self-propelled container ship. It will cut 1,000 tons of carbon dioxide and replace 40,000 diesel-powered truck trips a year,” said Yara’s chief executive, Svein Tore Holsether, in a note.

The company said the technology that will make the ship autonomous will now enter a two-year test period. Thereafter, the Yara Birkeland will be certified as an autonomous, fully electric container vessel.
