Brazil makes 1st shipment of carbon-neutral coffee; producer receives double award

Brazil has carried out its first shipment of carbon-neutral coffee, the production process of which emits less greenhouse gas. New exports of the more sustainable and valued product are on the way according to representatives of the cafe co-op that led the initiative, monteCCer

Using a different measure from the traditional 60 kg bag of “commoditized” beans, the shipment of 600 30-kilo bags of coffee took place in October to supply customers in Japan via Volcafe, the coffee commercial arm of ED&F Man, one of the world’s largest commodity trading companies.

The trading company paid a premium equivalent to 100 reais per 60 kg bag of carbon-neutral coffee, an amount that is double the differential paid for quality products and that have environmental and social certificates, said leaders of monteCCer, based in Monte Carmelo, in the Cerrado Mineiro.

“We work to de-commoditize coffee,” said the director superintendent of monteCCer, Regis Damasio Salles, explaining that this is not an easy journey, but it is worth it for the additional value received and also for preparing the business for future generations of coffee growers.

“We have (another) five deals set in motion,” added Salles, noting that the cooperative is negotiating with a large US coffee shop chain, as well as European buyers. He didn’t reveal names.
