Tereza Cristina calls China’s decision to overturn the veto on Brazilian beef exports “the first step”
Nov, 24, 2021 Posted by Ruth HollardWeek 202145
On November 24th, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply Tereza Cristina said that China’s decision to authorize the unloading of previously-approved Brazilian beef is the “first step” for the full resumption of exports of the Brazilian product.
“The next step is to release the suspension of Brazilian beef going forward. So, we are in this process in progress and I hope that this will happen in the next month”, declared Cristina to journalists who were waiting for her at the entrance of the ministry in Brasília.
Earlier, China announced that it will accept Brazilian beef import orders that had obtained the necessary health certificates before September 4th. The decision allows part of the cargo held in Chinese ports, due to the already-ruled-out suspicion of product contamination, to begin customs clearance.
Brazil suspended its beef exports to China on Sept. 4 after detecting two cases of mad cow disease. The cases were considered “atypical” for being a spontaneous type of the disease, with no danger of being transmitted in the herd.
