Pernambuco governor ensures another step in the viability of Transnordestina towards Suape

On December 2nd, the governor of Pernambuco, Paulo Câmara, assured the commitment Minister of Infrastructure Tarcísio de Freitas to begin a public consultation on Dec. 7 for the removal of Cocaia Island from the limits of the Port of Suape. Once removed from the area of Porto Organizado de Suape, the island becomes viable for the installation of a private iron ore terminal.
With that, the construction of the railroad connecting the iron deposits in the interior of Piauí to the Port of Suape becomes economically attractive and consolidates the enterprise of Mineradora Bemisa, whose concession must also be signed next week by the minister. Bemisa is the private investor selected by the Government of Pernambuco to make the railroad viable, through a concession contract.

The request for the construction of a 717-kilometer rail axis between the city of Curral Novo, in Piauí, and the Port of Suape, in Pernambuco, was made by Bemisa and represents an alternative to Transnordestina, whose work, begun in 2006, remains unfinished due to deadlocks between TLSA – the company responsible for building and operating the service – and the federal government.
