The national waterway transport agency (ANTAQ) and the Public Ministry of Labor (MPT) signed a technical cooperation agreement on December 2nd in Brasília to exchange data, information, knowledge, systems, and technologies for promoting improvements in general working conditions in state-owned ports and port terminals and in the provision of waterway transport services.

The ANTAQ/MPT technical cooperation agreement will have national and regional coverage and will be effective for 48 months once published in the official federal gazette, and may be extended by signing an addendum.

The agreement’s action plan provides the following specific actions: exchange of data and technical information; training of members and civil servants; definition of strategies and carrying out joint actions that are of interest to the participants; support in the dissemination of campaigns to combat illegal situations; and diagnosis of activities related to MPT and ANTAQ.

The main expected results are institutionalization and definition of flows for exchanging data related to port services, waterway transport, and port worker rights; carrying out a diagnosis to identify regulations and inspection processes related to work in ports and waterway transport; discussing normative proposals that have an impact on workers in the sector; conducting interdisciplinary courses related to the dissemination of technical information and possibilities for joint actions; and promoting initiatives aimed at eradicating cases of accidental scalping accidents on boats which victimize mainly women and children in the northern region of the country.
