In 2021, Brazil broke its absolute record for corn imports. Until December 19th, the country had imported 3.10 million tons of product. The previous record had been in 2019 when 1.45 million tons were imported.

According to Giovani Ferreira, content director of Canal Rural, the country had to turn to the international market to meet the domestic demand for corn driven by livestock. “Especially chicken and pigs. In 2021, Brazil should export more than 1 million tons of hogs, an absolute record. This is also de case for chicken. In order to make it possible, Brazil had to import corn. Now we hope that the weather cooperates to make this record impossible to be broken”, he said.

Still concerning maize, Ferreira highlighted its December results. “We knew that exports would be low, especially because of the corn shortage in the 2020/21 cycle. We had to rationalize exports to meet the demands of the domestic market. But in December, more corn had been handled than soybeans. Until the 19th, as of December total results, 1.9 million tons of corn had been loaded compared to 1.75 million tons of soy, which is not a bad result considering the shortage scenario.”
