Brazil sold US$ 1 billion in furniture and US$ 1.1 billion in fruit abroad in 2021. These and other record-breaking values can be found in the “Beyond Commodities” study that ApexBrasil is developing.
The survey shows that tractor sales produced revenue of US$ 335 million and electric generators, US$ 1.259. Many industries more than recovered from the pandemic: they surpassed 2019 levels, though it was not the case for the two sectors mentioned above.
Exports of engineering machinery, construction equipment, and mining equipment totaled US$ 2.36 billion in 2021, up 64% from 2020 and only 1.4% below 2019 levels.
Brazilian exports of all products totaled US$ 280 billion in 2021, up 34% over 2020. In the case of industrial goods, the value was US$ 144 billion, an increase of 26%.
Commodities on the rescue
Mineral ores and soybeans dominate the export basket. Both saw increases in their prices, which “also helped Brazil sell engineering machinery and tractors,” said Apex Market Intelligence manager Igor Celeste.
According to Igor Celeste, adaptation to consumer preferences is key to expanding access to foreign markets. Apex aided furniture producers in approaching new consumers. As a result, the sector saw its best performance since 2019, up 47%. Compared to 2021, the increase was 51%, while specific projects aided by Apex performed above average, up 59%.
The biggest consuming market is in the USA, accounting for 35% of the total foreign sales of Brazilian furniture. Next comes Chile, with 11%. Moreover, the 22% devaluation of the Brazilian currency compared to the dollar in 2021 contributed to market gains, evaluated Igor Celeste.
