Containers fell off a ship at the Port of Santos; one was salvaged.

On the 14th, two containers fell off the Monte Alegre ship, moored at the Port of Santos. One of them fell into the water but was retrieved. The other collapsed on the left bank’s Container Terminal (Tecon), controlled by the corporation Santos Brasil. There were no casualties.

According to a statement issued by the port corporation, the accident happened around 6:15 a.m., during a container unloading operation at Tecon. An emergency plan was put in place, prompting the mobilization of the port staff. Four other containers were handled aboard the ship but did not fall.

According to Santos Brasil, the fact that the container fell into the water caused no damage to the environment or the equipment involved. Nonetheless, teams from the Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo (Cetesb) and the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) stayed in Tecon until the 14th night to monitor the incident.

According to the company, the terminal continued to operate normally. The Tribuna newspaper tried to get a statement from the Santos Port Authority (SPA), the state-owned company responsible for the Port of Santos. Still, it did not receive a response until the closing of this edition.

The Santos Port Authority (SPA) stated in a release that it was alerted of an accident involving the collision of containers and the fall of five of them at about 8:45 a.m. on the 14th. SPA immediately deployed Occupational Safety and Environmental teams to monitor and identify needs for mitigation measures.

Also according to SPA, one of the containers fell into the sea and was removed by the operators themselves without damage to the environment or navigation.
