Brazil’s Papaya exports surge 12% year-on-year

Despite production bottlenecks hindering trade earlier this year, Brazilian papaya exports have risen in 2024 from January to May. According to Comex Stat, 17.60 thousand tonnes of the fruit were shipped during this period, marking a 12% increase compared to the previous year. Revenue also saw a modest rise, reaching $23.45 million, a 3% increase.

This boost in shipments, as reported by agents consulted by Hortifrúti/Cepea, is attributed to a rise in national supply, even if only temporary. The trend is expected to continue, with a larger harvest expected in the second half of the year. Consistent demand from Europe has also played a crucial role during this period.

However, despite the uptick in exports, the figures are still far from their peak levels. Notably, the revenue increase has been modest due to price pressure from importers. Although Brazil faces little competition in Europe, the influx of larger volumes of Brazilian papaya has driven prices down.
