According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Agriculture, Ukraine formally shuttered, on May 2, four Russian-captured seaports on the Black Sea and the Azov Sea.

The Sea of Azov ports of Mariupol, Berdiansk, and Skadovsk, and the Black Sea port of Kherson were closed “until control is regained,” the ministry said in a statement.

“The decision to implement this action was made owing to the inability to serve vessels and passengers, manage cargo, carry out transport operations, and other economic activities while maintaining a suitable degree of navigation safety.”

All Ukrainian maritime ports suspended their activities following the Russian invasion in late February, which prompted Russian forces to capture some ports and block access to others.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine might lose tens of millions of tonnes of grain on May 2, 2022, because of the Russian control of Black Sea shipping, sparking a food crisis that will affect Europe, Asia, and Africa.

The Ukrainian ministry had recently informed that Ukraine’s grain exports reached 45.709 million tonnes in the 2021/22 season.
