Maersk inks green bio-methanol partnership with Debo
Aug, 24, 2022 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202234
Global shipping company Maersk announced last Friday (8/19) a partnership with Chinese bioenergy company Debo to supply 200,000 tonnes of biomethanol produced from agricultural waste per year.
The start of this commercial operation is scheduled for 2024. It is the seventh agreement of such kind inked by the logistics company, which has been forging similar partnerships worldwide to increase the supply of clean fuels used in maritime transport.
Maersk is betting on green methanol for fleet transition to achieve net zero emissions across all its operations by 2040 — well ahead of other shipping companies.
One of the challenges, however, is scalability and economic viability. According to the company, partnerships between ecosystems and geographies are essential to pushing this agenda forward in this decade.
For Maersk, clean methanol is a short and medium-term solution.
“Green methanol is the only market-ready, scalable solution available for shipping today,” says Henriette Hallberg Thygesen, CEO of Fleet & Strategic Brands at AP Moller – Maersk.
In March, the company had already signed another six partnerships with Cimc Enric, European Energy, Green Technology Bank, Orsted, Proman, and WasteFuel, totaling 730 thousand tonnes/year of green methanol by the end of 2025.
The volume is higher than the company’s 12 green container vessels require. As a result, the extra fuel will be sold, including the entire volume produced in the partnership between Maersk and Debo.
These are bio and e-methanol projects that, once fully developed, will allow Maersk to source marine fuel on a large scale in various regions of the world — partnerships include companies from China, North America and South America.
