The BYD Shenzhen vessel departed from the Port of Itajaí at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday (1st), following four consecutive days of uninterrupted 24-hour operations. Equipped to handle roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) cargo, the vessel discharged 7,292 electric and hybrid vehicles — marking the largest single-call vehicle operation in Brazil’s history.
The operation was executed under strict stowage planning, ensuring optimal discharge sequencing per berth. Mobile harbor cranes (MHCs) were used to optimize turnaround time and minimize laytime. The inland logistics flow was supported by yard operators strategically positioned in the vehicle yard, ensuring fast and efficient unit release. Communication between the shipping agent, port authority, and regulatory agencies fully complied with port trade standards.
“The operation of the BYD Shenzhen — the largest vehicle handling operation in national port history — was executed with total efficiency in berth occupancy and pier productivity. This underscores the consolidation of the Federalized Port of Itajaí as a high-value port hub. When we took over, we inherited an idle terminal; today, we deliver a plug-and-play operation that generates jobs and tax revenue and drives foreign trade. It’s proof of concept that this port is back to five-star standards in efficiency and competitiveness,” said João Paulo Tavares Bastos, the port superintendent, emphasizing the operation’s multiplier effect across the logistics chain.
Beyond reaffirming Itajaí as a gateway port for high-value cargo, the operation handled a significant number of vehicles aligned with backhaul logistics. The unloaded units will now be distributed to dealerships and distribution centers nationwide via road transport. The operation also relied on tugboat support in the access channel, as well as continuous mooring and unmooring sessions on bow and stern lines and draft monitoring to ensure safe maneuvering.
The economic impact extends to terminal operators, customs brokers, automakers, and exporters: the clearance of this high-value cargo boosts both municipal (ISS) and state tax revenues, energizes the transport insurance market, and creates direct and indirect opportunities for port labor. In the coming days, a detailed operational report will be published. This performance highlights the revitalization of the Port of Itajaí as a benchmark for high-value cargo operations and will serve as a case study for the Brazilian port trade.
