Santos port moves record cargo volumes for the month of February

Cargo volumes handled at the Port of Santos surpassed 10m tons last month, a first for the month of February. 10.03m tons of cargo were handled in February, up 0.6% compared to February 2017 which previously held the record (9.98m tons) and up 3.7% compared to February 2018. Moreover, cargo handling for the first two months of 2019 hit a record at 19.08m tons, up 2.2% year-on-year.
Of the total cargo movements for January and February, 70% (or 13.23m tons) were exports – up 2.5% year-on-year. Imports also rose by 1.6% to 5.85m tons, year-on-year.
Soybean complex movements were up 31.1% in the first two months of 2019; with the commodity responsible for 34.6% of exports (considering weight) during this period. Fertilizer imports rose by 34.6% to 717,090 tons year-on-year.
Santos container throughput registered a drop in the first bimester of 2019, falling 12.3% to 570,230 TEU year-on-year. Vessel calls also fell 1% in February 2019, compared to the same month last year. The following graph shows Santos container terminals export figures since 2009:
