Port of Santos records growth in coffee and meat exports

The increase in shipments of coffee (152.2% year-on-year) and meat (231.5% year-on-year) were the highlights at the Port of Santos in April 2019.

However, overall, there was a drop of 10.1% in cargo handled in comparison to April 2018, to 10.5m tons; a growth of 0.6% imports and a decrease of 14.1% in cargo shipments.

Data collected by Codesp (Santos Port Authority) shows that in the first four months of the year, there was a decrease of 3.9% in cargo handled by the port, falling from 42.662m tons to 41.013m tons year-on-year.

Drops in shipments of soy and juice

The decrease can be explained mainly by the fall of 916,442 tons in shipments of soybeans in bulk and 114,450 tons of citric juice in bulk.

On the other hand, there was an increase of 156,131 tons in imports of fertilizer, 133,554 tons in gasoline shipments and 105,768 tons of coffee beans shipped in containers.

The largest volume of cargo handled in April 2019 was soybean complex (grains and meal), at 3.398m tons. In relation to the same month of last year, there was a drop of 22.7%.

The second largest cargo movement was sugar, at 890,131 tons, an increase of 6.2% year-on-year. Fertilizer was in third place for overall movement (first place in imports), at 358,621 tons, a growth of 77.1%. Pulp (343,514 tons) was the fourth largest cargo.

Coffee beans handled at the port increased to 175,271 tons (compared to 69,502 tons in April 2018) and meats to 122,015 tons (compared to 36,802 tons in April 2018).

In the accumulated movement for the first four months, shipments reached 29.029m tons, a reduction of 4.6% against 2018. Soybean complex recorded the highest volume, at 12.212m tons, a reduction of 2.1% compared to last year. The second was sugar at 3.782m tons, down 2.8% year-on-year, when the volume was 3.899m tons. Pulp was in third place, at 1.483m tons.

Reduction in imports

Imports in the first four months of 2019 were 11.984m tons, a reduction of 2% compared to 2018. The product with the highest volume in the period was fertilizers, at 1.229m tons, an increase of 25.1% against 2018. Second in the ranking was diesel oil, at 737,147 tons, 6.7% higher than last year’s volume for the same period.

Container Handling

In April 2019 there was a 2.3% reduction in TEU throughput and 1.7% in tonnage compared to the same month last year. Even with the reduction compared to last year, this was the second highest throughput in historical records for the month: 330,096 TEUs. In April last year, 337,901 TEUs were handled at the port.

There were 383 ship calls at the port, indicating a decrease of 5.7% year-on-year (406 calls in April 2018).
