Port of Long Beach director calls difficulty to find information ‘unbelievable’

Port of Long Beach Deputy Director Noel Hacegaba held a video conference detailing how one of America’s top ports handled the logistical crisis of recent years.
The executive emphasized that they took several measures, such as extending the terminal’s opening hours, imposing fines for those who were late in removing containers, and investing in digitalization. Still, one of the main problems was finding information.
“What have we done as a port community in response to the logistical crisis? One of the things we started to do was collect a lot of data since the difficulty we had in finding information during the periods of congestion was unbelievable (…) We put a lot of effort into collecting info on vessels, railways, and terminals and made it all available on our website,” said Hacegaba.
“Also, the lack of capacity led us to identify land within the port and make it available for containers. At the Port of Long Beach, we made 100 hectares available for terminals to move their containers away from their yards and give them additional storage capacity, helping them to process more cargo,” added the Long Beach representative.
“Another measure to address the crisis in the logistics chain was to increase the opening hours, as port terminals in the United States are not open 24 hours a day. There are two shifts, so extending the opening hours will allow us to build additional capacity,” added him.
“People walked to the store, bought their product, and despite the package reading made in China or Taiwan, they did not draw the link between what they had bought and how that merchandise arrived in the country, but this congestion situation attracted a lot of attention (to the ports), historical attention. That is why, last year, President Biden approved a law authorizing 1.2 billion dollars for ports, transportation, and logistics,” said the deputy director.
