Gov’t commission wants to get rid of abandoned ships in Guanabara Bay

A strategy to get rid of approximately 62 abandoned ships in Guanabara Bay and what will be done of the bulk carrier São Luiz, which recently collided with the Rio-Niteroi bridge, causing it to remain closed for traffic for hours and bringing a big nuisance to thousands of people. These were some of the topics addressed by the State Commission for the Development of Seaborne Economy (CEDEMAR) at the headquarters of the Rio de Janeiro state government. With 238 meters, the São Luiz has been berthed in the Port of Rio de Janeiro since the accident, disrupting its operations and creating expenses for the port authority.

For congressman Júlio Lopes, who attended the commission’s meeting with several other institutions, the encounter is training for a process initiated in 2007 to prepare the city for the Olympics by cleaning the Guanabara Bay of abandoned ships, as well as sunk vessels in the São Lourenço Channel, where they prevent proper water flow.

“At that time, we worked with Admiral Wilson Lima Filho to track and monitor all those vessels. However, as of today, no destination has been given to them since each has its past, implying enormous legal complexity. Nevertheless, I am sure that now the commission will be able to untie these knots and restore safe navigability in Guanabara Bay,” he said.

Júlio also explained that removing the vessels is something of a delicate nature as numerous attachment and international credit issues are pending in the courts, which also applies to the São Luiz vessel, which has been booked at the state and federal levels to pay creditors.

“It will not be easy, but now that the commission is in place, we are going to the president of the State Court of Justice and the president of the Federal Court to ask for help mobilizing justices so that they understand that these ships must be sold and turned into income, and the credits blocked in favor of its creditors, and so I hope we can have a happy ending for our city,” the parliamentarian explained.
