Consortium conducts feasibility study for the expansion of the Port of Natal

A consortium contracted by the National Transport Confederation (CNT) began studies to verify the technical, economic and environmental feasibility of building “Porto Potengi”, a project for a new port complex on the left bank of the Potengi River.

The Center for Strategies in Natural Resources and Energy (Cerne) presented the conceptual project for the restructuring of the Port of Natal in 2015. The project is the result of a partnership between Cerne and Studio Catucci, and was coordinated by the then president of the Center, Jean Paul Prates, current president of Petrobras.

In 2022, the CNT, in partnership with the mandate of Senator Jean, decided to deepen the conceptual project in view of the concern with the sustainable development of the transport logistics infrastructure in Brazil.

The first stage of the study should last at least six months and will be carried out by a consortium led by Dux Consultoria, a company with extensive experience in projects of this nature.

Soon, the consortium will be in Natal to carry out research, interviews and visits to entities of the productive sector, environmental agencies, companies and also to the Port of Natal, managed by Companhia Docas do RN (Codern).

The new port project is treated as an expansion of the Port of Natal, which faces operational difficulties. “The feasibility study of Porto Potengi is fundamental so that the Port of Natal does not see ships”, commented Jean Paul Prates, creator of the proposal.

The Porto Potengi port complex foresees the recovery of the estuary’s mangrove, which is mostly degraded already; the recovery of the Ribeira district; the construction of a third bridge over the Potengi River, and the creation of a direct connection, by rail branch, between the Port, the Airport (cargo hub) and the Export Processing Zone – ZPE.
