According to data from the Brazilian Association of Footwear Industries (Abicalçados), 26.77 million pairs of shoes were shipped in the first two months of the year, generating US$ 219.78 million, a 2.9% decrease in volume and a 5.1% increase in revenue compared to the same period last year. In February alone, footwear exports totaled 12.14 million pairs for US$ 101.85 million, with drops in volume (-10.6%) and revenue (-5.6%) compared to February 2021.
According to Haroldo Ferreira, executive president of Abicalçados, the drop seen last month is due to a reduction in shipments to the United States, the leading destination for Brazilian footwear abroad, and a slowdown in the global economy.
“Brazilian shipments to the United States have been declining since the second half of 2022, following a general decrease in imports from that country,” he notes. According to the executive, the North American market is experiencing a period of retraction, rising inflation, and rising inventories. “Last year, footwear imports increased by more than 33%, far outpacing North American retail (+1.1%),” he adds.
