Brazilian chicken meat exports grow 23% in March

Brazilian exports of chicken meat totaled 514.6 thousand tonnes last month, an increase of 22.9% compared to March 2022, according to data from the Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex) compiled by the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA). As a result, revenue from shipments grew 27.2% and reached US$ 980.5 million.

“Purchases from all of the main export destinations expanded across the board, at a time when Brazil was prepared for that from a supply point of view,” said ABPA president Ricardo Santin in a note. The low supply of protein in the Northern Hemisphere due to high production costs and foci of avian influenza, some importers bought more from Brazil.

In the first quarter of the year, the volume of exports grew 15.1% to 1.3 million tonnes compared to the same period in 2022, while revenues increased by 25.5% to R$ 2.57 billion.

China ranked first in purchases of Brazilian chicken meat in the first quarter. The volume was 187.9 thousand tonnes, or 24.5% more than in the same period last year.

According to ABPA’s director of markets, Luís Rua, the recovery of consumption patterns in China following the end of restrictions on people movement and the decrease in poultry housing levels in Chinese commercial farms increased the country’s demand for poultry meat.

The list of Brazil’s leading buyers of poultry meat included Saudi Arabia, the European Union, and South Korea, which imported 96 thousand (+69.9%), 62.2 thousand (+24.1%), and 50.9 thousand tons (+43.7%), respectively.
